What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth without the use of traditional metal wires and brackets. Instead, a series of clear plastic trays are customized for your mouth and worn over your teeth. Each week, you switch to a new tray, which slowly shifts your teeth into a more desirable position. This is a treatment option for adults and is typically more comfortable than traditional braces, which can poke and scratch the inside of your mouth. invisalign is also often cheaper than traditional braces, and some insurance providers cover it. It is a significant investment, though, and it will take time to see results.

The first step in invisalign is creating a digital model of your teeth. This used to require putting impression “goop” on your teeth and scanning it with a special camera, but optical scanners have eliminated this step and are much faster and more convenient for patients.

During your treatment, you will need to wear the aligners about twenty-two hours each day, removing them only when eating or drinking. If you remove the trays too frequently, your teeth may revert back to their old positions and your progress could be delayed. You will also need to brush your teeth after every meal and before replacing the aligners.

In addition, you will need to visit your doctor regularly. These visits will allow your doctor to check on your progress and provide you with new sets of trays. Depending on the complexity of your case, the total treatment can last from 12-24 months.
